重读 Google Founders' Letters （创始人的信）

前段时间，我突然心血来潮把 Google founders' letters（创始人的信）翻出来读了一遍。Founders' letters 是 Google（谷歌）两位创始人布林和佩奇每年轮流给股东们写的一封信，目的是在于告诉大家每年公司发展的最新状况、谈他们的想法和对公司未来的展望。写第一份信是在我们上市那年（2004 年），到现在已经有四封了。他们这个想法是受了巴菲特每年也写类似一封信的启发。
如果说一个公司的文化深受创始人的影响，那我觉得可能没有再比谷歌更典型的例子了。谷歌的文化从很大程度上就是两个创始人信念的缩影 — 注重用户，力求公正，相信技术，想要影响、造福世界。一步一步，才有了谷歌今天的文化和坚定不渝的使命 — 整合全球信息，使人人皆可访问，并从中收益。我跟很多人说过，如果你想了解谷歌在做什么，只要好好品味这句话就可以了。
终于，我找了一天，好好把四封信完整地读了一遍。虽然我加入谷歌已经两年半了，但这四封信对我的震撼还是很大，尤其是佩奇写于我们上市之际写的第一份信，让我感觉像是好好地充了一次电，既有感慨又有感动。我觉得很多谷歌理念的根本，没有比这封信里写地更透彻直接的了。在这里跟大家分享信里面我印象特别深刻的一些话:
“服务最终用户”
"Sergey and I founded Google because we believed we could provide an important service to the world—instantly delivering relevant information on virtually any topic. Serving our end users is at the heart of what we do and remains our number one priority."
“布林和我成立谷歌是因为我们相信我们能够为世界提供一个很重要的服务 — 在几乎任何问题上瞬息给人们提供相关的信息。为我们的最终用户服务始终在我们心里的最深处而且永远是我们第一重要的事。
“对长期的关注”
"Our goal is to develop services that significantly improve the lives of as many people as possible. In pursuing this goal, we may do things that we believe have a positive impact on the world, even if the near term financial returns are not obvious."
“我们的目的是要开发服务来大幅度改善尽可能多的人的生活。为了达到这个目标，我们会做一些对世界有积极影响的事情，尽管有些事情的短期经济利益不那么明显。”
“公司架构”
"We want Google to become an important and significant institution. That takes time, stability and independence. We bridge the media and technology industries, both of which have experienced considerable consolidation and attempted hostile takeovers."
“我们希望谷歌能成为一个重要并有影响的机构。达到这个目标需要时间、稳定和独立。我们要在媒体产业和技术之间架起一座桥梁……”
"When Sergey and I founded Google, we hoped, but did not expect, it would reach its current size and influence. Our intense and enduring interest was to objectively help people find information efficiently. We also believed that searching and organizing all the world's information was an unusually important task that should be carried out by a company that is trustworthy and interested in the public good. We believe a well functioning society should have abundant, free and unbiased access to high quality information. Google therefore has a responsibility to the world."
“我和布林当初创建谷歌的时候，并没有预计到谷歌会达到现在这样的规模和影响。我们当时有一个强烈并且知道今天也丝毫没有改变的兴趣就是能够客观的帮助人们有效地寻找信息。我们当时坚信搜索和组织全世界的信息是一个非同寻常的重要的任务，而且必须由一个值得信任并且希望为大众谋福利的公司来完成。我们相信一个运转良好的社会应该有丰富、自由和客观的途径来获得高质量的信息。因此，谷歌肩负着对全世界的使命。”
段落的意思无需我多解释，这些就是我还有很多 Googlers 对谷歌一直那么有信念的原因。不管是一个人，还是一个公司，有梦想并且坚持梦想总是一件很可贵的事情。在这里我无意说谷歌有多么好，谷歌也有很多需要不断改进的地方。我只是感触所致，想把所思所想，与所有的 Googler 和喜欢谷歌的人共享共勉之。
